CSS in Google Shopping — How to Pay Up to 20% Less for Product Ads
What is CSS, exactly?
In 2017, the European Commission fined Google 2.4 billion EUR for favoring its own comparison shopping engine (Google Shopping) over competitors. In response, Google opened its Shopping platform to external comparison shopping services — known as Comparison Shopping Services (CSS).
In practice, this means your product ads can be served not through Google Shopping (the default), but through a CSS partner. And that's where it gets interesting.
Why is it cheaper?
Google Shopping, as the default comparison engine, takes a margin on every click. When you switch to an external CSS partner, that margin disappears. The result?
- Lower CPC — with the same bid, your ad wins the auction more often because the effective cost is lower
- Or more clicks for the same budget — same spend = more traffic to your store
- Or better positions — at the same CPC, your ad shows higher in results
Without CSS (default)
Google Shopping takes a margin. Your bid of 2 PLN (~0.44 EUR) = effective bid of ~1.60 PLN in the auction. The rest goes to Google as a comparison engine fee.
With CSS
The CSS partner doesn't take Google's margin. Your bid of 2 PLN = effective bid of 2 PLN in the auction. You only pay for the click, with no extra cost layer.
How much will you actually save?
Officially, the figure quoted is "up to 20%." In practice, I typically see savings in the 10-20% CPC range, depending on the industry and competition. Example:
- You spend 20,000 PLN/month (~4,400 EUR) on Shopping
- After switching to CSS you save ~15% = 3,000 PLN/month (~660 EUR)
- That's 36,000 PLN per year (~7,900 EUR) — for a change that takes 1-2 days to implement
At budgets of 50,000-100,000 PLN/month, those savings become truly significant.
How do you set it up?
The process is simpler than you might think:
- Choose a CSS partner — there are over a dozen on the market (e.g., Producthero, Shopping24, Vertify). Some are free, others charge a small fee.
- The partner connects to your Merchant Center — you don't need to change your feed, campaigns, or anything in Google Ads.
- Your ads start serving through CSS — the only visible change is a small note "By [partner name]" under your product ad.
The entire process usually takes 1-3 business days. You don't need to change anything on your store.
Are there any downsides?
Honestly? Very few:
- "By [partner]" label — instead of "By Google" below your ad, you'll see the CSS partner's name. Most shoppers don't even notice.
- Some partners charge a fee — but it's typically 1-3% of ad spend, so you still come out ahead.
- EU only — CSS exists because of the European Commission ruling, so it only applies to EU markets (including Poland, Germany, France, etc.).
- Doesn't apply to Performance Max directly — but if your PMax campaign uses a product feed from a Merchant Center connected to CSS, the effect is the same.
When is it worth it?
- You spend over 5,000 PLN/month (~1,100 EUR) on Shopping/PMax with a product feed — below that, the savings may not justify the effort
- You run an online store — CSS applies exclusively to product ads (Shopping)
- You operate in Europe — Poland, Germany, France, etc.
When is it NOT worth it?
- You spend less than 3,000 PLN/month (~660 EUR) on Shopping — the savings will be minimal
- You don't run product ads — CSS doesn't apply to Search, Display, or Video campaigns
- Your CSS partner charges a high commission — if you're paying 5% of spend but only saving 10%, your net benefit is just 5%
