Performance Max vs Search — When to Use Which?

TL;DR PMax doesn't replace Search — it's a different campaign type built for different goals. Search gives you control and precision, PMax gives you reach and automation. The best-performing accounts use both.

The Performance Max Hype

Ever since Google launched Performance Max, many advertisers have heard: "just run one campaign and the algorithm handles the rest." That's not how it works. PMax is a powerful tool, but it's not a magic wand.

I've been running both campaign types for years, and I see the same pattern repeat itself: clients who turn off Search in favor of PMax lose control over what matters most — search intent.

When Search Wins

  • Lead generation — you need control over which queries trigger your ads. You don't want your budget leaking into Display and YouTube when your goal is a contact form submission.
  • Low budgets (under 5,000 PLN/mo, ~1,100 EUR) — PMax needs data to learn. With a small budget, it won't collect enough conversions for the algorithm to optimize effectively.
  • Niche products or services — when you're targeting a specific audience with clear intent. Search lets you precisely target long-tail queries.
  • Full control over ad copy — PMax mixes and matches headlines and descriptions as it sees fit. With Search, you decide exactly what prospects see.

When PMax Wins

  • E-commerce with a large catalog — PMax paired with a product feed can scale sales across Shopping, Search, Display, and YouTube simultaneously.
  • Higher budgets (above 15,000 PLN/mo, ~3,400 EUR) — more data means better signals for the algorithm. PMax truly shines at scale.
  • Remarketing — PMax automatically reaches people who've already visited your site across every Google channel.
  • Testing new channels — no time to set up separate Display, YouTube, and Demand Gen campaigns? PMax handles that for you.

My Recommendation

For most accounts, I use a hybrid approach:

  1. Search — for your most important brand terms and high-intent queries. This is your foundation, and you manage it manually.
  2. PMax — as a complement, to scale reach and remarketing. It delivers incremental volume that Search alone can't capture.
  3. Negative keywords — critical! Add your brand and top-performing queries as negatives in PMax so it doesn't cannibalize your Search campaigns.

The worst thing you can do is turn off Search and run PMax exclusively. You'll lose visibility into what you're actually paying for.

Red Flags

If your agency tells you any of the following — proceed with caution:

  • "PMax replaces all other campaigns" — it doesn't replace them, it complements them.
  • "You don't need to look at search terms" — you do. PMax hides a lot of data, but what it does show is gold.
  • "Just give the algorithm more time" (after 3 months with no results) — the algorithm needs good data, not more time.
Bottom Line Don't ask "PMax or Search?" Ask "how much budget for each?" The answer depends on your industry, budget, and goals. Not sure where to start? Reach out — I'll review your account for free.
